South Lamar or SoLa for those who live there, is one of South Austin’s smaller neighborhoods. As you may have guessed from its nick name, SoLa is trying to mold itself into SoCo’s little sister with its funky shops, bars and restaurants. You’ll find a lot of duplexes built in the 1980s, some brand new town homes and a few single family homes scattered throughout the neighborhood.

Where is South Lamar?
South Lamar is located in South Austin’s 78704 zip code. It is bordered by Clawson Rd and the railroad tracks to the east and west and Oltorf, Lamar and Highway 290 to the north and south. Commuting east and west is pretty easy and painless with Highway 290 just about 3 minutes away. Commuting downtown might take a few minutes at rush hour as Lamar does get quite busy, but most are willing to sacrifice a few extra minutes in the car for the location and value of the neighborhood.
Things to Do in South Lamar
There are several bars and restaurants up and down Lamar – a lot of them serve pretty good food too! Black Sheep Bar and Lodge is a great place to go if you want a burger. They have outdoor tables for days when its not too hot, or there is no game on. If you’re in the mood for coffee, Irie Bean is a cool place to go and read or do a few hours worth of work. Dog lovers – Irie Bean allows dogs on their back patio and you’ll often see a few there at any given time. You can also catch a movie at Alamo Drafthouse where they serve dinner and drinks. Buy your tickets and get there early, especially for popular movies because Alamo Drafthouse does sell out often.
