Located in North Austin near the intersection of highway 183 and Loop 360, Balcones Woods neighborhood was built in the 60′s and 70′s. It has a very active homeowner’s association that maintains the park, tennis courts and pool areas. There is a very good swim team for the kiddos in the summer. The neighborhood has several planned activities during the year, such as the annual Easter Egg hunt, and Fourth of July parade. There is a neighborhood newletter to keep homeowners connected. Also, there are several interest groups such as bridge, book club, dinner club, and wine tasting group.

Where to Shop and Dine Near Balcones Woods
This neighborhood is near some great shopping and dining areas. The Arboretum area has shops such as Whole Foods Market, Nordstroms Rack, Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware, Barnes and Noble and Saks Fifth Avenue. Then there’s the newest shopping area, The Domain, with Neiman Marcus, Tiffany’s, Louis Vuitton, and many other high end shops. There’s also Target, TJ Maxx, and Ross Dress for Less nearby. Finding a good place to have lunch or dinner is no problem here. For some good seafood try Truluck’s, Eddie V’s or McCormick and Schmick’s. For Asian, there’s PF Chang’s. Mexican food is in abundance around this neighborhood. Manuel’s has an outdoor patio that is reminiscent of old Mexico. Z’tejas has great margaritas and good food. The Domain has a plethora of restaurants that cater to the happy hour crowd.
What to do in Balcones Woods
Many of Austin’s bicyclists like to ride on Loop 360 and cross over the Pennybacker Bridge over Lake Austin. There is a private park that is owned by Hyde Park Baptist Church that the homeowners are free to use. It has a little spring fed lake with canoes that is stocked with fish for the kids. Walking on the trails is a favorite pastime. There is also a fitness club that the neighbors can join.
