More About Downtown Austin

Downtown Austin sits just north of the Colorado River. (Because the River is dammed, it’s referred to as – formerly Town, now – Lady Bird Lake). Texas’s State Capital building sits atop a small hill at the northern tip of Austin’s grand Congress Ave. 6th St., historically, is the other main Downtown Austin thoroughfare. While there has been a lot of development in recent years, Downtown Austin is still known for its many historic buildings. Downtown Austin is a bustling Downtown. People enjoy the Capital City for numerous reasons, including business, entertainment, education, government and nature. It’s become such a successful destination, other cities send teams to study what has made Austin so great.

Downtown Austin – Activities

Downtown Austin is flush with things to do. There are restaurants, entertainment and live music venues, museums, bars, grocery stores, including Whole Foods Market’s flagship headquarters location, and churches. There are also city-sponsored activities, yearly festivals, and a weekly farmers’ market. The Lady Bird Hike & Bike Trail, lining the southern edge of Downtown, is one of the city’s most appreciated assets: unless the weather is uncommonly miserable, the Trail teems with people exercising, visiting and taking in Austin’s natural beauty. (Thanks to Lady Bird Johnson for bringing her nature conservation and beautification efforts from D.C. to Austin.) Within Downtown Austin limits, there are a few parks. The best green expanse is the Capital grounds.

Not only does Downtown Austin house numerous businesses and offices, government buildings and residences, but we also have schools. And just north of Downtown is the ~60,000-student University of Texas at Austin.

Downtown Austin – Neighborhoods

Downtown Austin is made up of different neighborhoods. There is the State Capital Complex, the Congress Avenue District, defined by businesses and office buildings, the 6th St. Entertainment District, the Market District (anchored around Whole Foods Market), the Warehouse Entertainment District, and a few historic neighborhoods with lovely, original homes, many which are now used for commercial purposes.

Downtown Austin – Accommodations

You’ll find a few homes in Downtown Austin but most residents live in larger developments. Condos, lofts and rental apartments can be found throughout. Some are high rises with views, some are not. Some are on the river, many are not. Some are loft conversions, some are new. Some are luxury, many are not. You get the picture. Downtown Austin – Location

Downtown Austin is defined by Lamar to the west, Martin Luther King Boulevard to the North, I35 to the east and the Colorado River to the south. Two streams run through Downtown. Shoal Creek (plus Greenbelt and Trail) on the west side and Waller Creek towards the east side of Downtown. There are plans for both of these creeks to become greater assets for Downtown.
