Why are we Keeping Austin Weird?
Walking around Austin you may hear people muttering the phrase "Keep Austin Weird," and it is not just the schizophrenic man with no shoes and a long crusty beard that marches to this drum. “Keep Austin Weird.” has become a mantra for the city and all it represents. Self described by the writers of this movement is a “collaborative fission of coordinated individualism.” Austin, Texas is a diverse town of cool, independent, free thinkers and by Keeping Austin Weird we prevent ourselves from blending in to normalcy and mediocrity of average society. Austin is a melting pot of cultures, races, socio-economic levels, and mainly just a bunch of “chill” folks. Many people that visit Austin decide to move here because of our laid back acceptance of whoever and whatever you are. Keeping Austin Weird embraces all the things that make us each unique and we probably have an annual party dedicated to it too! No other city has a birthday party for Eeyore (yes, THAT Eeyore), Spamarama, a celebrity homeless crossdresser, Esthers Follies, and the Austin Art Car Parade. Other Central Texas cities have given a nod to “Keep Austin Weird” by being “Between a Rock and a Weird Place,”(Pflugerville) and “Keep Round Rock Mildly Unusual,” (Round Rock). But no place has the pizzazz and absolute whimsy of Austin, Texas. I challenge you to find a cooler town with more awesome people in all the world.

As a REALTOR who has participated in the Art Car parade- I drove Aralyn Hughes pink pig art car, held Ara the pig and oinked & made other pig noises at the crowd- I enjoy diverse Austin as well! Whatever you are into or whoever you are, you can find friends and others to share with.
