Golf in S/SW Austin: Grey Rock Golf Club
One of the things I love to do is golf! I just wish that I had more time to get out and play the game. My introduction to golf came in the 9th grade when my dad was diagnosed with a blood clot in one of his legs. His doctor advised walking, so dad took up the game and took me along. Am I glad he did!
We played mostly at the Atascocita Country Club on Lake Houston and at Magnolia Ridge Country Club in Liberty, Texas. It was on those two courses that I developed my game and my love of golf. I have some good memories of my many trips around those courses.
Beginning with this blog, I am writing about Austin area golf courses south of Lady Bird Lake (the Colorado River).
Grey Rock Golf Club (formerly known as Circle C Golf Club) is located in SW Austin on the south side of Circle C Ranch, a large and popular residential community.
You can get to Grey Rock GC going S on Mopac (Loop 1), or N or S on FM 1826, to SH 45. The golf course is enhanced by its wide fairways (making it playable) and by the many live oaks that decorate the course and add to the challenge of navigating its 18 holes. The course also has a number of doglegs, sand traps and water hazards that always get my attention.
Part of this club’s uniqueness comes from the division of the course by SH 45. The first 8 holes on front 9 are located north of SH 45. The remainder of the course (holes 10-18) is on the south side of SH 45. Walking from the club house to and from holes 1 and 8 could take awhile! (Aren’t carts a blessing?) In the past 3 years some residential development (Muirfield and Fairway Estates—both gated) has taken place along some of these holes.
I played this course with a friend in May and found it to be in very good shape. Though I don’t play from the tips anymore, there were still plenty of challenges to my rusty game. My fondest memory from that day, other than spending time with another Jim, was shooting 47-39 on my first full round this year. One shot I remember well was my drive to the center of the fairway about 80 yards from the green on the 18th hole. My lob wedge approach looked sweet in the air, but what a disappointment when it came down in the hidden bunker at the back of the green!
Grey Rock Golf Club is public, but memberships are available. Golf rates for adults range from $45 for seniors (65+) to $80/100 for the “less mature.” Rates include green fee, cart rental, and range balls. The course features a nice pro shop, practice facility and driving range.
Some 20 years after its beginning, Circle C Ranch is still being developed. New neighborhoods such as Meridian, The Enclave, Fairway Estates and Alta Mira are works in progress. Circle C Ranch has many amenities for individual and family enjoyment. Homes in Circle C Ranch come in a wide range of sizes (1450 SF to over 4500 SF) and prices ($215,000 to over $600,000).
