Southpark Meadows _ A Long Awaited Development for South Austin

Print this blog entry Send this blog entry to a friend

Anyone who has lived in far south or southeast Austin understands what a boon to south and southeast Austin this project is and what it will continue to contribute to these areas. Before Southpark Meadows, there was a very limited amount of shopping, entertainment and businesses available to the residents here. What was located south was so spread out that you had to travel all over South Austin to find what you wanted. Most of the larger stores headed west to the Centers on  Brodie Lane. “Southpark Meadows” has changed all of that. Most people recognize the name as a long time music venue. Southpark Meadows is a mega 425 acre mixed use shopping and entertainment center located at I-35 and Slaughter Lane. Wal-Mart was the anchor of the first phase, but has now expanded to include such super stores as Rooms- to- Go, Ashley and Bassett Furniture Stores. There is also, Super Target, Borders, Hobby Lobby, Bed and Bath, Bealls, J.C. Penny’s  plus  many large and small shops to numerous to name them all. There are major restaurant chains such as Chili’s, The Roadhouse T.G.I. Friday’s and others. Final touches on a Cinamark Theater, Gatti Town and other major retailers are in process. In the center of all of this, there is an oasis of sorts. It is planned as a gathering spot featuring local shops and restaurants surrounding a centralized oak-lined gathering and play area. Most of the surrounding shops have patios connecting to this for little of the laid back South Austin feel amid all of the action going on around you.
Included in all of this shopping and entertainment are plans for apartments, condos and single family homes in addition to the homes that are already being built here due to the construction and opening of Southpark Meadows.
South Austin has always been overlooked with most of the development to the north or outside the city limits. Southpark Meadows has changed the face of south and southeast Austin bringing businesses, homes, new schools, shopping and entertainment to an area that has historically been underutilized.

I remember when this meadow was where all the kids went for concerts. Now, it has turned into a major shopping center.

I'm impressed with the quality of shopping in the Southpark Meadows area. There are many new start ups or smaller companies that offer some unique experiences. One of my favorite things is the kids playground in between the bar/grill restaurants such as Waterloo Ice house, Jason's Deli, and the Wings and Rings. This is great for young parents that want to socialize with friends but allow the kids to tag along. This if fun for the whole family.

I love the unique small shops along with the large department stores but my favorite reason to shop here is the music. I was told by a shop keeper that when the property was sold for developement the developers had to agree to hold live music concerts on the grounds. The original owners of South Park Meadows held huge concerts on the property years ago so I guess they wanted to carry on this tradition. The concerts have been a great sucess this summer, check out the concert schedule by going on line or visitng the shopping center.
