Horseback Riding Near Austin, Texas
I am going horseback riding on Sunday at McKinney Roughs Park near Bastrop, Texas. 1100 acres, nice wide trails and a lot of shade, pine groves, enormous pecans, cottonwoods & scenic overlooks make this a great place to ride in Central Texas Summers. We all ride gaited horses- the smooth walkin' horses you won't spill a flute of champagne on. Tennessee Walkers, Rocky Mountain Spotted, Paso Finos, Peruvian Pasos, etc. My favorite is Cheyenne- a clonable black and white paint. This gaited baby is beautiful, has the sweetest disposition, and nicest little sashay. McKinney Roughs is a bring your own horse setup and charges $10.00 a person.
McKinney Roughs hotline: (800) 776-5272 ext. 7427#
It is near the Bastrop- Hyatt Lost Pines Resort which has guided trail rides, pony rides and a horse camp. The Hyatt has their own string of equines. Pony rides are $30.00 and include a picture.
Another nearby horsey place is the Happy Horse Hotel. Billed as a "Bed and Bales" experience, you can stay there with your horse and ride their place or go to McKinney Roughs.
Another favorite place to ride is Parrie Haynes in the North west, near Ding Dong and in between Florence and Killeen. Miles of trails traversing creeks, beautiful views!
