Thunder on the Colorado in March | Smithville Texas

The 4th Annual Thuder on the Colorado Biker Ralley is coming back to Smithville Texas again March 19-21st. This is a fun rain or shine event that will have live music, a bike run, swap meet, camping, bike parade, bike show, vendors and games. There is a $15 entry fee good for the entire weekend but you must be 21 or older to attend. This fun event down by the river in the beautiful Riverbend Park will benefit Bikers Against Child Abuse ( BACA), the Texas National Guard Family Support Foundation, and the Smithville Chamber of Commerce.

The friends of Bastrop County Animal Shelter are holding a fundraiser "Hearts for Paws" Sunday February 14th at Maxines on Main in downtown Bastrop. There will be a two hour Silent Auction that will begin at 4pm and end at 6-m. All proceeds will benefit the Animal Shelter. This is a different way to celebrate with your Valentine but should be fun and for a good cause. There will be roses for the ladeis, a cash barn,a nd complimentary food. I love the small local newspapers that are published to support small towns in Texas and the rest of small town America! With so many people turning to the internet for news, small newspapers like the Smithville Times may become a thing of the past but for right now, while I can still pick up a weekly copy of the Times I will continue to enjoy sitting down with a cup of coffee to see what is new in the Smithville area every Thursday. This isn't a big paper but it is full of local stories that include sports, and community activities well as articles about local neighbors, friends, and business associates reaching milestones such as sports awards, and celebrating anniversaries and the like.

New Convention Center underway | Bastrop TX

A new Convention Center is in the works here in Bastrop Texas. The plans are for a 26,000 sq. ft. facility to be built across Chestnut Street from the new City Hall that is under now under construction and scheduled to be finished this summer. This is an exciting addition to the Bastrop area. The Convention Center is slated for completion in 2011. This is just part of the growth that Bastrop is experiencing which is visible from Hwy 71 as you drive through town including the new strip mall and three new hotels under construction by the Walmart shopping center. Bastrop is growing up!

Bastrop | 1832 Farmers Market | Fresh local produce and meats

Bastrop has a year round Farmers Market in Downtown Bastrop. The 1832 Farmers Market is located at 1302 Chestnut locted by the rail road tracks. Featuring local farmers, ranchers, and artists you can find grass fed beef, Berkshire pork, free range chicken/eggs, local seasonal produce and fruits, herbs, spices, sauces, and handmade soaps. The market is open two days a week all year long. Hours are Tuesdays from 2:30 pm to 6 pm and Saturdays from 2pm to 6pm.

Pecan Shores | Smithville | On the Colorado River

Colorado River property in Texas is very popular and just outside of Smithville in Bastrop County there is a small development of river properties called Pecan Shores. Pecan Shores is only has a couple of streets and most all of the properties in Pecan Shores are at least a couple of acres in size, either on the river or directly across the street from it. Over the New Year's holiday I was working with a client looking for farm and ranch property for his future alternative dream home. He was most interested in acreage that had sandy loam soil, a nice mix of native trees, some pasture, a good water source with some variation to the terrain and in an agricultural environment. One of the first areas I thought of was Red Rock in Bastrop County. Red Rock is located about half way between Bastrop and Lockhart ( in Caldwell County ). Red Rock was established in the late 1800's as were a lot of the small towns and "burbs". The population has basically stayed the same over the years. Hidden Shores | Smithville | Bastrop County Texas

The Colorado River flows from Austin through Bastrop County and down to the sea by Matagorda. Lots of properties abut the river and are becoming quite coveted. One of the areas that has recently been discovered is Hidden Shores which is located just 2.5 miles outside of Smithville on FM 2571 which is on the south side of the river. Hidden Shores is a penninsula surrounded by the river.

Lakes | Bastrop County

Bastrop County has lakes! They are not as big and impressive as Lake Travis or as well known as Lady Bird Lake but these three lakes are some great spots for fishing and recreation!
The largest body of water for public use is Lake Bastrop which is run by the Lower Colorado River Association. Lake Bastrop is approximately 906 acres and 60 ft. deep. Lake Bastrop is a fishing lake and also offers camping, swimming beaches, and playgrounds at the North and South shores.
Two much smaller lakes are are in private relaxed lake communities - Indian Lakes and Lake Thunderbird - which have been hidden getaways for home and land owners for years. These lakes are managed by their community associations and they are stocked but are not open to public use.
