Smithville has been called one of the “Best Kept Secrets in Texas” and is centrally located, 40 miles east of Austin, 12 miles east of Bastrop, and 20 miles north of La Grange. This town, an old railroad town on the Colorado River, is filled with historic and period homes and is known for its annual Jamboree at Riverbend Park, and for having baked the largest Gingerbread Man.

Smithville

Smithville was established about 1827 in a rich farming area and it is still devoted to agriculture today. Smithville is also becoming a film-friendly town and a movie hub in Texas after the movie Hope Floats, as well as others, have been filmed in the city. Its historic downtown is home to antique shops, specialty boutiques and restaurants.

Where is Smithville?

Smithville is located in Bastrop County. It is 12 miles southeast of Bastrop and 29 miles southeast of Austin. This city is also located along the eastern edge of the “Lost Pines of Texas.” Smithville is also on the Colorado River and is a stop on the Colorado River Trail that is an 11 county exploration that travels 600 river miles through Central Texas scenery. Smithville residents will most likely live in either 78957 or 78995.

Smithville Activities

Even though it is a small Texas town, Smithville has many things to see and do. From the four day Jamboree to seeing the Guinness Book declared largest gingerbread man. If railroad history is the interest, Riverbend Park has a real caboose as well as two others in the Railroad Historical Park.
