Upton Texas is only a remnant of what it once was. Settled in about 1840 it grew from a one room school house to a community with a general store, a cotton gin, church and a post office - which provided postal service from then until it closed in the 1920's. Now mailing addresses no longer say Upton, rather Smithville which is the closest town, about six miles away. Bastrop is the next biggest town and it is about 15 miles. Delhi Texas was originally going to be called Iron Mountain when the town was big enough to apply for a post office but the Postal Service rejected that nameand Delhi was chosen.
